The highly anticipated, laugh-out-loud third installment in the fan-favorite Junior Bender mysteries

There are not many people brave enough to say no to Irwin Dressler, Hollywood's scariest mob boss turned movie king. Even though Dressler is 93 years old, LA burglar Junior Bender is quaking in his boots when Dressler's henchmen haul him in for a meeting. Dressler wants Junior to solve a crime he believes was committed more than 70 years ago, when an old friend of his, once-famous starlet Dolores La Marr, had her career destroyed after compromising photos were taken of her at a Las Vegas party. Dressler wants justice for Dolores and the shining career she never had.

Junior can't help but think the whole thing is a little crazy. After all, it's been 70 years. Even if someone did set Dolores up for a fall from grace, they're probably long dead now. But he can't say no to Irwin Dressler - no one can, really - so he starts digging. What he finds is that some vendettas never die; they only get more dangerous.

I'm a fan of Timothy Hallinan's Junior Bender dectective series and that goes for this third outing, too. The author has never been better in the scenes he sets up or in the snappy dialog between Bender and his frequent and scary employer, old-time Hollywood power broker, Irwin Drexler. Drexler contracts with Bender for burglary but equally for his other specialty--solving problems for criminals who do not care to involve public law enforcement personnel in sorting out their troubles.

Junior's name is apt: he is 'bent', being a professional burglar from the age of 15. Also, in writing the series, Hallinan 'bends' time: the setting is at once 'retro', going back to the 'Turner Classic Movie' period of Hollywood's 'Golden Era' and blurring its way into the Fifties, Sixties, Eighties and on to the new Millennium. This is no easy trick but Hallinan always makes it work for me!

The author packs in the classic Hollywood details and he is very strong on descriptive writing. He can write violence, compassion, the details of burnt out lives, LA geography--really, whatever he needs to write to advance the story line and keep the 'atmosphere' at a high level. Characters just seem to 'roll of the tip of the author's pen.' Some of them are 'stock' items, like the hard-bitten secretaries or actress 'extras' and the Hollywood 'hangers on' like agents and studio PR experts, but they all live on the page for me. Even Drexler's beefy 'muscle' are given a little bit extra in terms of character. Bender is a 'crusader' type of LA detective with plenty of heart, a bit of 'naivite' and a willingness to exact revenge where it is merited. It is no surprise then that this third outing aims at revealing the past as well as in unmasking and punishing a murderer. Even when he is being a 'father' to his daughter the 'vibe' stays hip and cool: she is a computer whiz at 13 and has her own 'wise beyond her years' take on family life and romance.

If you can 'suspend your disbelief' a bit and buy into the above description, you will very likely enjoy the Bender books as much as I do!

The Fame Thief A Junior Bender Mystery Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Timothy Hallinan Peter Berkrot Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

I stumbled across this series a short while ago, in some fashion I can't now recall. I am so glad I did and am reccing them to other readers. Have enjoyed every one of the Junior Bender series so far. *Really* nice to find a mystery series where each book is so well written. I just love Junior's inventive and funny quips and observations. Hallinan has invented a uniquely clever and engaging hero along with an equally enjoyable ensemble "cast" of supporting characters. Junior's "cases" and lifestyle are unique. At least I don't recall coming across this type of crime fighter before. That's all I'll say to avoid any spoiling.

A bonus to reading these I've learned a lot as well. Have had to google a *lot* of references, plus ordered a couple literary works based on mentions in the book.

But don't think that means it's heavy going to read AT ALL. All three so far have been highly enjoyable, quick reads. I won't say I couldn't put them down, but I was also eager to get back to each one. Was not tempted to go find anything else to read. And I have pre-order #4 in the series.

My only reason for not giving them 5 stars is that I only give 5 to books that leave me breathless or wanting to keep them near me after I've finished. This series is good but not up to that standard. Still , go - read - Enjoy!
Junior Bender is a first-class burglar operating mostly in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area AND, more interestingly, he is a detective for A-list crooks with not-ready-for-primetime problems that need discreet and sometimes illegal probing, in the same city.

In "The Fame Thief," he (reluctantly) takes on a job for a 90-year old crime boss who has been pulling strings in Hollywood and the film industry for many decades. The task is to find out who torpedoed the career of a B-movie starlet (one Delores La Marr) in the 1950s and why. With that launching pad, Bender is off on one of the most hilarious and clever investigations in crime story history. Every page is crammed with crusty, smart-talking characters who probably are pretty close to the authentic inhabitants of tinseltown--or at least as the rest of us imagine them to be. In any event, the dialogue cracks like a whip continuously, with one oral duel after another.

Author Tim Hallinan has outdone himself in stitching this fun and very funny novel together. It satisfies on every level, including in its well-thought out conclusion. This is a wonderfully entertaining read. Highly recommended.
Hallinan does it again in his inimitable way of mixing his great sense of humor, unparalleled ability at unique descriptive phrases, and dialogue gems of inspired creativity into a true interest grabbing yarn of mystery and surprises.

Los Angeles and Hollywood from the 40s up through our current era is the backdrop for a wondrous mixture of very real and blended history, and it's up to the reader to separate the historical, semi-historical and various shades of blending.

The reader may recognize some first names, some last names, and where too delicate some fictitious names representing very real ex-people. There may even be a ghost or two thrown into the mix this time.

I found some of the history and accompanying explanations, as an example Koreatown, really interesting.

As the plot unfolds, the reader really doesn't know anymore than our hero, Junior Bender, and there's not much chance that the reader is going to be able to guess what he finally finds out. And even right up to the end, he is caught be a further surprise.

Although names are changed, the tone of the book is quite real as it relates to the history of Hollywood and Los Angeles for about fifty years from the 40's onward. And, frankly, organized crime has simply elevated itself into operating continually further into legitimate businesses with the leverage being, perhaps, somewhat more subtle.
