During the government shutdown in 2013, we all learned just how deeply Americans care about their public parks and memorials. Yet few people seem to be aware of how much their national shrines in Washington are being increasingly defaced and disgraced by questionable security barriers. Here is a newsworthy book that documents this untold story of mass paranoia in words and photos that are bound to shock readers.

Have you been to Washington, D.C. in the last decade? The city's beauty is marred by barriers and security gates, many of which have a temporary, thrown together feeling years after they have been installed. On one level, this is an aesthetic issue, but on another it is a visible statement of how our relationship to our country and its most important city have been changed by the national security state, with no participation from the public. Just like NSA spying, the clumsy ritual at the airline security gates, and the scanning of our postal mail, we are losing part of our political heritage; our freedom from unwarranted governmental intrusion. This book tells the story of what has happened to D.C., with photographs and research. I can't say "enjoy" but I do recommend for anyone who cares about this city.Product details

Bunker City Pushing Paranoia in Washington edition by Arthur Rowse Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
We have been brought to think of the world's changing landscape to be the result of changes to the earth on the part of commercial interests. This wonderful book details changes to the landscape of Washington DC caused entirely by the government in a haphazard effort to make our nation safer. The book is nicely written and the many photographs provide all the visual clues one needs to understand the changes.
The Washington DC that used to welcome its visitors with great zeal to show off the pearl of American freedom and openness has been modified to create an effective and threatening fortress. The changes that began following 9/11 have converted the old charm of our capitol city. Automobile traffic around the area of the White House has been shunted away and pedestrians are discouraged from looking at the building and surrounding lawns from the distance of the perimeter fence. The entrance to the Department of Commerce now looks like a twenty-first century version of Traitor's Gate at the Tower of London. The Department headquarters of HHS has an entry that makes one think that the building must house the US nuclear arsenal. All our public buildings have become almost impossible to approach with the addition of guard houses, steel and concrete barriers, closed streets and boulevards, and idiotically rerouted entrances. Bunker City is good reading and its lessons wise to remember. The author provides both humor and outrage to the subject and these are well modulated and well deserved.
It is an easy and worthwhile one-night read. When you are done reading Bunker City you will want to recommend it to your friends -- I know I did.
